Murphy's Law
I remember those days of trying to sell myself to a future employer.
That is what my son, Alek, is going through now.
He’s prepared his resume and sending it out to prospective employers in hopes of having a job soon after graduation in May.
I remember sending out resumes, and hoping to hear back from various newspapers.
Some never bothered to say yes or no, which meant no.
Some brought me in for interviews.
I remember applying for a job in Iowa, and not getting it because they couldn’t afford me.
That always seemed odd to me because I had no real-world experience and no salary history.
I was ready to take the job, and the editor was so apologetic for not hiring me he generously payed me for the gas it took me to drive to and from the interview.
Another time, I found out a few years later I didn’t get a job — also in Iowa — because I was married.
