Humphrey not first site considered for RCUT

Adams County went with roundabout instead

An RCUT was considered in Adams County long before it Humphrey was chosen for one.

Wes Wahlgren, Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) District 4 engineer, said an RCUT (Restricted Crossing U-Turn) was discussed for the U.S. 6 and Adams Central project before a roundabout was chosen as the best option.

“It was one of the alternatives we looked at,” he said. “The roundabout has more traffic calming (because) of the school and young kids ... I think (that’s why) they selected the roundabout. It’s more of a safety issue because we have inexperienced drivers crossing the highway, and the roundabout actually causes thrutraffic on the main highway to slow down. An RCUT, essentially is just a roundabout but it’s stretched out. I really would have liked to have seen an RCUT (at the intersection). I think the concept ... is interesting. They add a great deal of safety, too.”
