Herbert Detlefsen

Herbert Detlefsen, 89, of Lincoln, Neb., formerly of Humphrey, Neb., died Wednesday, June 5, 2019, at his home in Lincoln.

The funeral service was on Saturday, June 8, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church (39452 205th Ave. Rural Creston, Neb.), and Rev. Brad Birtell officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in the Humphrey City Cemetery. Visitation was on Friday, from 5-7 p.m. at Duesman Funeral Chapel in Humphrey, Neb., and continued on Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Humphrey Veterans Memorial.

Herbert Detlefsen was born Oct. 23, 1929, in Humphrey, Neb., to Andrew and Ella (Koopman) Detlefsen. He graduated from Humphrey High School in 1947 and went to work for his father at the City Meat Market in Humphrey Herbert was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean war, and after his honorable discharge, returned to Humphrey where went back to working with his father. On Dec. 7, 1958, Herbert was united in marriage to Beverly Joos in Omaha, Neb. The couple made their home in Humphrey. After Beverly's passing on Jan. 28, 1978, and on Oct. 23, 1984, Herbert married Merna (Brase) Didier in Bellwood, Neb. He retired from the market in 1994 and moved to Lincoln in 2005.

Herbert and Merna wintered in Arizona for the past 25 years. He enjoyed golfing, playing shuffle board, fishing, going on walks, dancing, bowling, playing cards, was an avid Cubs and Nebraska Cornhusker fan, and going on family vacations to Sand Bay Resort in Battle Lake, Minnesota. He was a member of the Nebraska Locker Association where he had held several offices. He won many awards for his sausage and hot dogs that he made. Herbert enjoyed attending and supporting his grandchildren in all of their events.

Daughter – Sara (Paul) Johnson of Lincoln, Neb.

Son – Andy (Cyndi) Detlefsen of Lincoln, Neb.

Son – James (Kathy) Detlefsen of Lincoln, Neb.

Son – John Detlefsen of Lincoln, Neb.

Step-Son – Jeffrey (Mary) Didier of Schuyler, Neb.

Step-Son – Anthony Didier of David City, Neb.

Sister – Mary Ann Unvert of Reston, Va.

Cousin – Peter Dethlefsen of Humphrey, Neb.
