Recently, when listening to Father Scott Harter, pastor at Prince of Peace in Kearney, preach on Purgatory, I was struck by something included in his homily, a declaration from the Second Synod of Orange in the year 529 A.D. in France: “God loves you as you will be by His grace, not as you are by your merits.” It is through our trials and tribulations, aided by His grace, that we become all He created us to be — fully alive in Him.
