ACHS students witness dignity on Omaha streets

A group from Archangels Catholic High School’s campus ministry spent a day with Hope of the Poor, a downtown Omaha outreach for the homeless, in a trip that organizers hope will become a regular, seniors-focused opportunity. The outing, organized by campus minister Emma Strecker, grew out of Fr. Allan Phan’s visit to ACHS, during which he shared his experiences with Hope of the Poor and inspired Strecker to bring the mission to life for the students.

Twenty students in grades 10 through 12 joined Strecker for the day. “It was a great experience for everyone,” Strecker said.

The day began at a church, where adoration and live praise music set the tone. The performers, Danny Leger and Bella Worthing, also connected with the group through their work with Hope of the Poor; Worthing plays violin while Leger, who leads the Omaha ministry, performed with his guitar. Fr. Phan joined the group for the day, and after a brief orientation the students headed to the nonprofit’s coffee stand.
