The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is developing a Rail Crossing Safety Improvement Plan spanning from Omaha to Lincoln. NDOT is asking for feedback on railroad crossings that may feel unsafe or present challenges during travel.
Residents in these areas are encouraged to share their experiences by completing a brief, five-minute survey by Thursday, August 20. The survey is available on the project website at ndot-omaha-lincoln-rail.com.
The study focuses on 140 BNSF Railway crossings along 64.5 miles in parts of Douglas, Sarpy, Cass, Saunders, and Lancaster counties. The goal of the plan is to understand how each crossing functions today and recommend improvements that could reduce crashes and improve travel for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists. Input from the survey will be combined with additional data, such as crash history and cost analysis, to pinpoint areas with safety and operational concerns.
