LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

I am writing to thank you for the effort you put into the Humphrey Democrat. It just so happens I grew up across the street from Don and Irene Zavadil who owned and operated the paper before you took it over. I spent time at “the office” when I was growing up with their daughter Annie. The Zavadil family had published the paper for generations, so I wondered how it would be having someone from outside the community take it over. I must say, I have been pleased with all you do and have done with the Democrat.

First of all, you do a great job of looking for stories in the area and reporting on them. Your front page coverage highlights the community most every week. I find it fascinating to learn about people who live where I live, but whose experiences are not the same as mine. I learn from them. Thank you for sharing the experiences of others.

You also do the schools a great service by highlighting all the good things that are happening with our kids and their teachers. The Bylines page that you publish once a month gives journalism students from both schools the opportunity to write for a real audience, sharing their voice with others. It is important for them to learn that they do have something to add to the conversation. I know there are many who look to the sports page each week to see how the Bulldogs and the Flyers are doing during each respective season. The pictures you publish each week of our athletes showcase their effort and talent. Finally, our schools have a lot going on all of the time. You are willing to publish pictures and articles anytime we send them your way. Thank you for supporting our schools in this way and keeping our kids “in the news” in a positive way!
