Verlene Sophie Shemek

Verlene Sophie Shemek, 89, of Humphrey, Neb., passed away Saturday, Oct. 11, 2025, at Arbor Care Center - Countryside in Madison, Neb.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Tarnov, Neb., with Father Taylor Leffler celebrating the Mass. Visitation was on Monday, from 5:30-7 p.m., with a Rosary Service at 7 p.m., at the church. Visitation continued on Tuesday, from 9 a.m. until service time, at the church. Interment was in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to St. Michael Historical Society.

Verlene was born on Oct. 8, 1936, to Frank and Anna (Kush) Shemek. She graduated from Humphrey Saint Francis High School in 1954. She worked on the family farm her entire life. She enjoyed working in her huge garden. She cooked and canned everything for everyone. She raised chickens and milked cows while assisting everyone with all daily tasks as needed. She was dedicated to her family and cared for her parents, and brothers Marvin and Donald and her beloved sister Laura throughout their lives and through each one of their illnesses until their deaths. Verlene was a faithful person and remained dedicated to her faith through all joys and obstacles she faced. Her loving and selfless spirit was always present to everyone around her. She was a beautiful soul who always put everyone before herself. She treated everyone with kindness and always told stories of her experiences throughout her life. She loved her family, nieces and nephews and her great nieces and nephews, and her warmth and honesty was always seen by all of them.

Verlene is survived by her sister in law Lucille Schemek of Columbus, niece Kristine (Gene) Kosch of Norfolk, nephews Paul (Janelle) Schemek and Mark (Amanda) Schemek of Tarnov, Great nephews and nieces Aiden & Natalie Kosch, Ashley, Alex & Alivia Schemek, and Hailey & Ethan Schemek.

Verlene was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Marvin , Donald and Norman and sister, Laura.
