Mary Ann dedicated her life caring for others, whether her siblings, her students, the underserved in Chicago and the Amazon rainforest, and, of course, her children and husband.
Mary Ann Wemhoff was born April 24, 1944, in Sidney, Neb., to Theodore and Mary (Frederick) Egging.
When she was growing up, as the eldest of 16, she cared for and helped raise many of her brothers and sisters from a young age.
Mary Ann volunteered to help train people for a medical facility in the Amazon rainforest and that is where she met her husband.
On Feb. 20, 1971, Mary Ann was united in marriage to Ivan Wemhoff in Westmont, Illinois. Together, they raised four kids. She was a wonderful mother.
Mary Ann worked proudly for over 43 years as a registered nurse. This included positions at clinics, hospitals, mental health facilities, and long-term care facilities.
She was drawn to the latter especially and took pride not only in caring for multitudes of patients, but in training and advising multiple generations of future caregivers.
Towards the end of her career and in her retirement, she enjoyed living in the Nebraska countryside on a farm, quilting, crafting, canning, and being a grandma.
She loved to spoil her grandkids and shower them with love — sneaking them treats on the sly, stitching quilts for them embossed with her love, baking delicious zucchini bread that was everyone’s favorite, and taking them on golf cart rides around the farm. She also loved and welcomed all of her kids’ fur-babies and loved her own pets as well.
She was patient, loving, and steady — someone you could depend upon. She had a way of making people feel special, seen, and at home. She was compassionate, accepting, and unfailingly kind. No matter what was going on, there was always a warm, home-cooked meal. She was a fierce Rummikub player — which she passed along to her four kids. She gave phenomenal hugs.
